David H. Johnson was born in Frankfurt, Germany, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Yale University, and his law degree at the University of New Mexico. His thirty years of experience as a healthcare provider and attorney aid him in providing practical solutions and advice for hospitals, insurers, medical groups, healthcare professionals and other healthcare entities. His areas of focus include regulatory representation (CMS, OIG, state healthcare regulators, professional licensing boards), healthcare transactions (contracting, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures), medical staff issues, managed care, compliance issues (Stark, Anti-Kickback, billing), EMTALA, HIPAA, clinical research, pharmaceutical issues, alternative dispute resolution and complex healthcare litigation.
Before joining Bannerman & Williams as a special counsel in health care law, Johnson was a director and head of the healthcare business and regulatory group at Rodey, Dickason, Sloan, Akin & Robb. He previously served as Assistant Vice-President and Regional Compliance Officer and as Counsel for Lovelace Health Systems, an integrated delivery system located in Albuquerque.
Johnson began his career as a health lawyer in litigation practice, focusing on medical malpractice defense and complex litigation involving ERISA and health care class action lawsuits. He has been a faculty member of the UNM School of Medicine and adjunct faculty at the UNM School of Law, UNM College of Nursing and the Stanford University Primary Care Associate Program.
Prior to attending law school, Johnson practiced for eleven years as a Family Nurse Practitioner for health maintenance organizations, a county health department and academic medical centers in New Mexico. He has published many articles and a book chapter on a variety of health law topics and speaks frequently to attorneys and industry groups on legal and medical bioethics issues.
